THE TESTIMONY, TRIBUTES AND ATTRIBUTES

A decimal point, dot or a period is used to indicate the significance of what it is attached to. This very small, seemingly insignificant round mark or spot is a powerful symbol. It can refer to the thing that caps and "tops off" the small letter "i." We use it for a full stop in punctuation, or a decimal point in numbers. In networking and on the internet, it delineates network sizes, partitions and subnets. It is the most  important symbol in web sites, email and IP addresses. In fact, without the "dot" none of this would be possible! Celebrating the "dot" is what this moment is all about. The legacy of the "dot" is timeless, and we would like to honor it and the uncountable connections with just about everything with an additional "T." Knowing that "dot," is both a noun and a verb gives us the opportunity to personify it. Today we will use this opportunity to bestow the additional "T" honor upon a person who epitomized the small footprint but large influence that a dot can have. To Dorothy Nicholson, AKA Dott Nicholson Brown, this one is for you!

A "CHARACTER" IS MORE THAN WHAT WE'RE CALLED ITS WHAT WE EXPRESS

Dott was a character with the characteristics of a mother hen, a fierce lioness and a wise owl. She celebrated life at every opportunity and shared the achievements and moments that came with it. People of action respond without hesitating too long. They desire to have a positive effect on the greater good of mankind and are motivated by caring and compassion rather than profit. Like Dott, they are ready and willing to argue, debate and pontificate on their point of view. These soldiers have an ability to sanctify the Lord God in their hearts while being ready to give an answer to every man that inquires of them the reason of the hope they embrace. Yes, Dott had an answer! She was an avid reader with a voracious appetite for enlightenment and information. The majority of her research over the last four decades were dedicated to health and wellness. As she read and uncovered truths, her discoveries were often shared with her children and extended family by sending them articles cut out from magazines, newspapers and other sources. She would write letters to the entire family warning us of the perils of bad diets and narrow-minded doctors. She made our health as important as her own. We can honor her memory in our deeds towards others and in the diets that nurture our bodies.

DOCUMENTING THE DOTT WITH TWO T'S

Picture
**************************LOOKING BACK**********************
Looking back is good to do
As long as we enjoy the view.
Each glance opens a memory
our minds will hold eternally.

There's a time appointed
when we all will leave
So, let's give our hearts
a season to grieve.

When that season is over
and we get past the dread
Our hearts rise above sorrow
And our faith looks ahead.

"DOTT" WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS A POWERHOUSE. "SHE" SUPPORTED A MULTITUDE OF CAUSES AND CHARITIES PHYSICALLY AND FINANCIALLY. FROM FAMILY TO COUNTRY "HER" LOYALTY EXEMPLIFIED "HER" CARING CHARACTER. "SHE" WAS MORE THAN JUST INVOLVED IN POLITICS. ALONG WITH "HER" FRIEND MIA, THEY DIRECTLY PARTICIPATED IN THREE (3) DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTIONS. "SHE" CAMPAIGNED AND WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN BOTH OF PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ELECTIONS. "SHE" COULD RUB SHOULDERS WITH ROYALTY WITHOUT COMPROMISING "HER" INTEGRITY. "HER" INVOLVEMENT IN NATIONAL, LOCAL AND FAMILY ISSUES EPITOMIZED "HER" CONCERN FOR OTHERS WORLDWIDE. WHENEVER AND WHEREVER HUMANITY NEEDED "HER" SUPPORT, "SHE" GAVE IT! AS LONG AS WE REMEMBER "HER," "SHE" CAN LIVE IN OUR ACTIONS AND MEMORIES.

FINDING & MAKING FRIENDS WAS HER FORTE!

Ever get a call
in the nick of time
It came in before
You lost your mind.

Ever get a card
when all others forgot
If it caught you by surprise
it most likely was Dott.

Yes, she was the type
that we rarely see
Her life sparked a fire
from A straight to Z.

I think she would say
"If you remember me,
just live, love and laugh
that is my legacy!!!

SOMETIMES IT IS EASIER TO DEFINE OR DESCRIBE SOME PEOPLE AND SOME THINGS BY WHAT THEY ARE NOT RATER THAN BY WHAT THEY ARE. gOD, LOVE AND SOME GREAT PEOPLE FIT INTO THIS CATEGORY!

THERE'S NO SUCH THING!!!

To some she was a hero, showing up just in time unexpectedly, without a cape, on a "Kaper" or mission of rescue. Her vibrant and energetic presence along with her words of censure and support were inspirational. Many of us wondered how this "little lady" could have such a big impact and hold such a wallop if needed. She made everyone feel like they were her favorite, and we assume each one thought they were. Her favorite color was purple, and her favorite number was nine (9). We can only wonder if the resemblance and shape of both the letter "P" and the number "9" had a meaning that reflected how she valued her relationships. The purple "P's" aligned with the magnificent 9's throughout her life. Her first born was conceived in the ninth month of the year. Her husband was also born on that same month and day. Everything has some significance, but we may not understand its full meaning. Numbers are not lucky, but they are noteworthy. Dott considered the number "9" to be meaningful in ways that transcended common sense and reason. The strangest thing was that usually when she applied her methodology to that number or a multiple of it, blessings seemed to flow.

The significance of the number 9 is profound across various contexts. In numerology, it symbolizes completion, a culmination of experiences a transformation, and spiritual enlightenment. Culturally, it is associated with unity which conveys a message of fulfillment and wholeness. She also attended The Unity Church which adorned that same name. Spiritually, the number "9" is seen as a pinnacle in many belief systems, it embodies transcendence. The number is also viewed as a container for all worldly experiences, encompassing the wisdom of all preceding numbers. Overall, the number 9 holds a unique and significant place in both spiritual and cultural contexts.

The backwards "9" better known as the letter "P" also holds many significant spiritual meanings. "P" can stand for power prestige and, purpose. The letter "P" symbolizes personal growth and transformation. The letter "P" symbolizes authority, representing the ability to motivate and inspire others. It encourages us to embrace our own leadership qualities and take responsibility for every one of our actions. The royal letter "P" means that each of us has a part to play in making this world a better place. There is no place or room for making excuses. "P" is associated with living a life of purposeful passion. It reminds individuals to align their actions with their values and goals, fostering a sense of meaning and direction in their lives. In Kabbalistic tradition, the Hebrew letter Peh (פ) represents the mouth and is linked to communication and expression. It signifies the importance of words and how they can manifest thoughts and intentions into reality. In Hinduism, the letter "P" is connected to purification and spiritual growth, symbolizing the removal of ignorance and the attainment of knowledge. It encourages individuals to seek enlightenment and persist in personal development. Persistence was one of Dott's crowning attributes. She always pushed forward and never gave up even if we did. Her example teaches us to push ourselves and one another forward in spite of how things might appear. We should not act or respond based upon how things look. We are people of faith, and her life reminds us not to walk by sight. Where there is life there is hope. We each can serve as catalysts to and for one another. The "P" also represents the "purple" of royalty. According to the Bible, we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood and a peculiar people! The power of revival is in us! Using either our individual or combined energies enables us to initiate, incentivize and overcome many of the obstacles we face through the work of faith! In numerology, the letter "P" corresponds to the number 16, which resonates with inner wisdom and spiritual development. This connection relates to the importance of heeding intuitions during our spiritual journey. In Celtic culture, the letter "P" corresponds to the birch tree, symbolizing new beginnings and adaptability. This association highlights the spiritual significance of personal renewal. The spiritual significance of the letter "P," can help us to harness and purpose energy in ways that transcend logic by embracing God given power and purpose.

Purple, specifically "the color" purple, symbolizes spirituality, higher consciousness, creativity, and transformation. This makes it a powerful hue in the various colorful representations of spiritual energy. Connection to Higher Consciousness. Purple is often associated with the crown chakra, which is linked to divine wisdom and universal consciousness. This color serves as a symbol of divinity, enlightenment, royalty and an understanding of our connection to the universe.

WE'RE TOGETHER: IN WEDDINGS FUNERALS & REUNIONS: WE'RE FAMILY

Picture
She developed from a small-town country girl to a mother and matriarch. She ran for and was elected to the advisory council in Co-op City shortly after moving there. Her ad campaign was powered by her children who placed flyers under every door in each of the apartment buildings her electorate resided in. She was successful economically, politically and socially. Her life is impossible to encapsulate in this small tribute. Dott's giving spirit was contagious. When it came to others, especially children, she would celebrate giving even if their families did not participate in birthday, Christmas and holiday gifts. She treated her nieces and nephews like sons and daughters. "We are family," was one of her favorite rallying songs. She could even outdance the girls from Sister Sledge.

FOLLOWING A FUNLOVING FANATIC

Picture
Anyone that really knew Dott was aware of the playful and childlike side of her that never grew up. She focused on fun whenever and wherever she was. Even during some serious and solemn situations she could have a "Joan Rivers moment." She could get away with a chuckle, laugh or smirk that may have been "too soon" but not inappropriate. This was not sarcasm. These were moments of reflecting truth, in spite of how others wanted to paint a rosy picture. She loved to celebrate any and every occasion that in some way marked any notable achievement or called for remembrance. She brought more than life to the party. Whenever it was needed, she was the life of the party!

CAPPING IT ALL OFF WITH A TOAST

Picture
The lessons "Dott" leaves us with can be attached to the maps in our minds. Dots of many sizes adorn the sky. They may seem small from our present perspective but when closely inspected reveal a wealth of information. We remember our "Dott" as a point on a map, a spot in the sky and a star in a constellation. Yes, the dot is a powerful symbol. It is a landmark. Whenever we cross a "T" or dot an "I" we can think of her. Before there were ever any "dot coms" we had our very own.  The Eulogy is a simple as the burial. We hear it in all of the tributes. We will not write a eulogy, like a benediction given at the end of a religious church service. We will carry and pass on a legacy wrapped within our future efforts, promises and actions. This will not be a disconnect, but rather a reconnect and a maintaining of the spirit "Dott" exemplified. We don't need memorials or special occasions to remember her if we keep a DOTT with two T's engraved in our hearts.

OUR LAST DANCE TOGETHER HEre in this life

THE TAKEAWAYS AND WHAT WE LEARNED

She taught us that true strength does not fear confrontation. She would show compassion and feel sorry for us but would not allow us to wallow in pity or feel sorry for ourselves. She believed in rising to the occasion and leaving a testimony as an overcomer! For those of us who give up, lose hope or surrender this is not a legacy to be lived into without changing our ways. In the end she leaves the "DOTT" legacy to be embrace and expressed by us. As we live into and outwardly practice our natural lives that eternal our mortal souls, take note! Let her example, both failures and successes inspire us to live up to a measure of her life's story. Let it continue and live on in our lives each day!

The way you tied the symbolism of “Dott” together made me laugh out loud with joy, it felt so much like her and you. She loved dissecting your riddles and wit and debating them quite frankly. Oh, Joey! You turned something simple into something spiritual, connecting her name to meaning in a way that only someone who really knew her could.

You didn’t just write about “Dott,” you documented her spirit.

As I read the poetry in “Looking Back,” it gave the piece an emotional rhythm (something I’ve struggled to find lately); it felt like a pause to breathe and remember her for all she was/is..

I loved how you elevated her through both facts and feelings, like the political work, community service, and global awareness, alongside her personal warmth and humor. That was a true reflection of the fullness of her life.

As her granddaughter (her favorite) who saw her both up close and through everyone else’s admiration, I found myself thinking about how we each experienced her differently and how that’s part of her magic.
The blog celebrates her legacy, but I wonder if there’s room to weave in her real human moments too, the witty side-eyes, her sharp tongue, the lessons she taught by being unapologetically herself. Every day I regulate and delegate unapologetically, and I have to laugh because the “Dott” definitely runs in my DNA.

A few other thoughts, as questions, that I will continue to reflect on after reading this post and celebrating an amazing human being, who just so happened to be my favorite: How can we, as her children and grandchildren, continue her legacy together, not just individually?
What would a “living DOTT legacy” look like as a family tradition or project?
How do we make sure “family” remains a verb (something we do), not just something we are?
What are the small daily actions (calls, forgiveness, encouragement) that keep the Dott legacy alive between us?
What will my generation add to the Dott legacy that reflects the world we live in now?
When my child (future generations) looks back at us, what will they say we did with the gift of her legacy? She was definitely one of the best gifts that God gave me.

Love you and this!!!

*insert purple Heart* From Her Favorite and Yours too
