We all are so much more alike then we are different. For some reason historically and anticipatorily, we tend to focus on and magnify our differences above our similarities. As human beings we share a common bond anatomically, biologically, socially and historically. When we come together in an environment that fosters harmony, we can easily see we are quite the same. There is only one race of people, that is the human race. When we choose to focus on our differences, we highlight ideologies. We focus on and site country, culture, language, nationality, creed and color. As a species we ought to be ashamed of ourselves. No other group of living organisms expressly differentiates themselves in this manner. Watching dogs as they socialize exhibits the fact that they do not discriminate by breed. I have always found it fascinating to watch a smaller dog in a dominate leading position over a much larger and more physically powerful one. Pecking order and hierarchy in most species is not determined by origin or appearance. Isn't it derived from an intelligence and dominance hierarchy? How we, as human beings, define ourselves and one another determines how we characterize our interactions. There is a new level of sectarianism within our ideology. Sectarianism is a form of bigotry veiled in discrimination and powered by hatred. It is characterized by the same feeling of superiority that propagated slavery. The recipients of this type of oppression are expected to accept and embrace their position of inferiority. By creating subdivisions within any group through differences in ethnicity, class, religion or politics; "CAUSES" give way to crimes in the name of the greater good or God. These crimes against humanity incite aggression by and against any culture, creed or country. We are rapidly becoming more interactive and interdependent globally; While we foolishly and simultaneously embrace separatism and independence locally. Our species, "human beings," have a history of autocracy, colonization, exploitation and enslavement by one another. This malignant trait exists and is exercised among our own individual families. It is no wonder that it extends to others across the lines of color, culture and language. Shame on us: that we have the means and technology to deliver fresh water to all people throughout the world. Shame on us: that we waste enough food to end world hunger with what we dispose of. Shame on us: that months and years after natural disasters the victims of those calamities are still suffering. That the richest and most prosperous country in the world has two large neighboring islands still in disarray months and years later is a tragedy. The most astonishing but rarely publicized indictment against the more developed countries of the world is that obese people outnumber hungry, undernourished and underweight people globally! We are all members of the universe. Uni meaning one, verse meaning a part of a whole sentence, poem or song. The answer to ignominy is that we can only do better if we know better. The response to xenophobia is that fear of the unfamiliar is based upon teaching. People generally love new experiences or learning new things. So why don't we embrace the advent of being exposed to the existence of other customs, cultures, and concerns. The guardians of tradition are often the persecutors of progress. Progress, technical advances and modernization generally have a disruptive effect upon society. When we study history remember that history is written by the victors and conquerors. This implies that much of its perspective comes from that mindset. Follow the enmity among Shiites and Sunnis, Arabs and Israelis, India and Pakistan, Russia and the Balkan states, Blacks and Whites, Cowboys and Indians, The Hatfield's and McCoy's, Cuba and The United states to name a few. A short list of martyrs include John Brown, Joan of Arc, Socrates, Bhagat Singh, and Jesus Christ. All of these examples were demeaned in a pejorative manner to justify their executions. We must guard against repeating these travesties by maintaining vigilance against the "divide and conquer" strategies disguising themselves as righteous causes. We can learn from the regrets of the past without worrying about the events of the future if we stay awake in the present. A healthy heart and mind is more valuable then temporal riches. Discrimination is a disease of our thoughts manifested in our behavior. Love is an attitude of mind demonstrated through our actions.
